Sunday, April 16, 2023, at 2:30 pm

Based on Nordic and Germanic myths, Das Rheingold (The Gold from the Rhine) is the “preliminary evening” to Wagner’s epic masterwork, The Ring Cycle. The story begins when the dwarf Alberich renounces love and steals the magical gold guarded by three Rhine nymphs. From this gold, he has a ring forged which will give him dominion over the world. Wotan, the ruler of the gods, lusts after the ring and breaks his own laws to obtain it. Alberich puts a curse on the ring which sets into motion the rest of the saga. This groundbreaking “total work of art” fully integrates music, poetry, drama, costume, and set design in a sweeping, intense marathon of sight and sound. This will be the first production of Das Rheingold in the history of Dayton Opera.

Steve Winteregg & Sierra Leone Expressions
Rouse Flute Concerto
Respighi The Pines of Rome
About the Concert
The “Eternal City” could find no more fitting tribute than Respighi’s vibrant Pines of Rome, transporting you to famous pine stands around the Italian capital … a Renaissance family’s splendid estate, near a catacomb suggested by a mournful chant, the moonlit beauty of the Janiculum hill with the haunting song of a nightingale, and, along the Appian Way, triumphant trumpets and the thunder of marching armies. Brandon Patrick George, Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra alum—and hottest young flutist around—connects you to the Celtic inspiration of Christopher Rouse’s Concerto. The season opens with the DPO and Chorus giving the world premiere of beautiful work by Daytonians Sierra Leone and Steve Winteregg inspired by the legacy of Miriam Rosenthal.

Program
Debussy Nocturnes (Clouds & Festivals)
Reena Esmail Meri Sakhi Ki Avaaz (My Sister’s Voice)
Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade
About the Concert
In the One Thousand and One Nights, the Sultana Scheherazade nightly diverts her husband with cliff-hanger tales of the sea, shipwrecks, princes, and princesses to save her life—definitely pre-#MeToo! Rimsky-Korsakov’s alluring showpiece whisks you off to that exotic world with music that’s languid and sensuous, shimmering and romantic, stormy and terrifying! Debussy’s Nocturnes depicts clouds floating across the skies and boisterous village festivals punctuated by trumpets and drums. Reena Esmail’s musical roots let her look West and East as her composition about sisterhood soars to ecstatic heights, blending Hindustani and Western classical musical traditions.
Symphonie fantastique and Vadim Gluzman
Friday, November 18, 202, at 7:30 pm
Saturday, November 19, 2022, at 7:30 pm

Program
Verdi La Forza del destino Overture
Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1
Berlioz Symphonie fantastique
About the Concert
Berlioz’s passion-propelled Symphonie fantastique—dazzling with fiery orchestral colors and effects—follows the love-sick hero’s drug-induced visions to a glittering ball, a scaffold, and a demonic Witches’ Sabbath with the Dies irae pounding out a hair-raising theme amid the orgiastic tumult. Emotions also run high in Shostakovich’s Concerto, whose sonorities range from quiet contemplation to the most spectacular cadenza you’re ever likely to witness, to a frenzied finale, guaranteed to leave you profoundly moved. Antoine Clark (“led from the podium with balletic poise.” ~ Chicago Tribune), a rising star among young American conductors, makes his Dayton debut.
Tchaikovksy’s Polish Symphony

Program
Bacewicz Overture
Chopin Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21
Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 3, “Polish”
About the Concert
This Polish-themed event begins with Grażyna Bacewicz’s Overture, a gleaming piece of music brimming with hope and optimism that contrasts the time in which it was written: the German occupation of Poland in World War II. Then, after making an effervescent debut in 2014, pianist Spencer Myer returns to the stage to perform Chopin’s Concerto No. 2 in F minor. Upon its 1839 premiere in Warsaw, the work was hailed for its indescribable beauty and sublime nature. The concert closes with Tchaikovsky’s rarely performed Symphony No. 3, nicknamed “Polish” due to its rousing, folk-dance final movement.
Perspectives: War and Peace

Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 7:30 pm

Program
Lili Boulanger For a Soldier’s Funeral
Michael Schelle Resilience
Vaughan Williams Pastoral Symphony (Symphony No. 3)
About the Concert
“Subtle, gentle, troubled, reflective, […] movingly modest, considering the violence that begot it. The work’s calm, if calm it is, is hard-won.” That’s how The New York Times describes Vaughan Williams’s response to World War I, following his return home from the front. Lili Boulanger also responds to The Great War in her brief and affecting piece with baritone and our DPO Chorus. A double concerto that features our viola and cello principals, Resilience commemorates the end of World War II, with its final movement an emotional prayer for peace.

Beethoven’s Second Symphony
Friday, May 19, 2023, at 7:30 pm
Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 7:30 pm

Program
Mozart Missa brevis in C Major, K. 259, “Organ Solo Mass”
Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1
Beethoven Symphony No. 2
About the Concert
Saint-Saëns once said of himself: “I produce music as an apple tree produces apples.” The First Cello Concerto is certainly a delicious example and a gorgeous vehicle for the instrument’s sonorous voice, especially as performed by young Sterling Elliott, a winner in the 2019 National Sphinx Competition. Mozart’s brief Mass (really brief!), with a “cameo” appearance by the organ, shows off our magnificent DPO Chorus. Beethoven’s Second concludes this season’s Masterworks series and our Beethoven symphony cycle. Responding to his near-suicidal anguish over growing deaf, the composer wrote to a friend: “I will seize Fate by the throat. It will not wholly conquer me!” This Symphony is the jubilant proof of his will to live.
